Cameron Highland, the ‘Puncak’ of Malaysia

Located in the state of Pahang, Cameron Highlands is one of Malaysia’s most popular mountain destinations. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, the area offers cool air, serene green landscapes, and a variety of engaging activities that captivate both local and international visitors.

History of Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands was discovered in 1885 by Sir William Cameron, a British surveyor. Initially, the area was developed as a retreat for British colonials seeking to escape the heat of the tropical climate. Today, Cameron Highlands has evolved into a renowned tourist destination, celebrated for its natural beauty and tranquil ambiance.

Cameron Highlands is a well-known highland resort and tourist area on the Malaysian peninsula. It’s often compared to Puncak in West Java, Indonesia. However, while Indonesians may be more familiar with Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands offers its own unique charm. Both highland regions are located in the state of Pahang, with Genting Highlands in the south and Cameron Highlands in the southwest.

Rich in natural forests, Cameron Highlands rivals the appeal of Genting Highlands. With temperatures ranging from 8–25 degrees Celsius, its cool climate, lush greenery, and tranquil environment make it an ideal getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life.

This allure also drew the British during colonial times. Cameron Highlands was discovered during an expedition led by William Cameron, who was sent by the British government in 1885. In honor of his discovery, the area was named after him.

Places to Visit in Cameron Highlands

There’s no shortage of attractions to explore in Cameron Highlands. During a visit in early December, we stayed overnight at the Strawberry Park Resort before starting our day with a jeep ride to Mount Brinchang. Our first stops were Mossy Forest and the expansive Boh Tea Plantation.

The tea plantations, spread across terraced hills, offer breathtaking views. Beyond enjoying the scenery, visitors can tour the tea factory and sample various tea blends. After the plantation, our jeep climbed further to the summit of Mount Brinchang. From there, we took in panoramic views from a tower overlooking the area.

Following the mountain views, we ventured into the dense Mossy Forest for a brief trek of about 200 meters. Here, we not only experienced the forest’s mystical ambiance but also learned about conservation and the medicinal properties of its plants. Interestingly, the forest has no dangerous or venomous wildlife.

In contrast, the Butterfly Garden nearby houses some fascinating creatures, including venomous snakes, scorpions, and tarantulas. Just a short distance away are other attractions like the Time Tunnel Museum and the Rose Centre, where various species of roses and other flowers are on display. Visitors can also purchase fresh flowers, vegetables, and fruits at roadside markets offering highland produce at reasonable prices. For food enthusiasts, the night market is a must-visit for its local culinary delights.

A Glimpse of English Heritage

Even during peak holiday seasons, Cameron Highlands maintains a serene vibe. Tourist spots are conveniently located near each other, and Tudor-style architecture can be seen throughout the region. One standout is The Smokehouse, built in 1937, which exudes colonial charm. Similarly, our stay at the Strawberry Park Resort featured touches of Tudor-style design, reflecting the enduring British influence in the area.
