When I was younger, I loved playing with Lego. Although the Lego set actually belonged to my older brother, I used to join in the fun. For those who aren’t familiar, Lego is a type of plastic brick with small nubs that can be assembled into various shapes like houses, cars, robots, and more. Did you know this iconic educational toy originated in Denmark in 1949? Even though I haven’t played with Lego in years, I recently discovered Legoland Malaysia Resort, located in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, which is just a 2-hour direct flight from Jakarta with Air Asia! I must admit, Malaysia did a great job being the first to open a Legoland in Asia after the ones in Denmark, the US, the UK, and Germany.

The first thing that came out of my mouth when I arrived at the Legoland Hotel was “So cute…!” The seven-story hotel is painted in vibrant primary colors, just like Lego bricks. The lobby is decorated with Lego-themed ships and castles, complete with a Lego play area underneath. The hotel has 249 rooms designed for families, accommodating up to five people with two separate areas: one room with a king bed for the parents and another with a bunk bed that sleeps three. Guests can choose from themes like Pirate, Kingdom, or Adventure. The rooms are child-friendly, featuring two sinks in the bathroom for adults and kids, two TVs, and a set of Lego toys. The entire hotel is adorned with Lego decorations and displays. How adorable!

From the hotel’s back exit, you’re immediately at the entrance to Legoland Theme Park. The park is divided into seven themed areas: The Beginning, Miniland, Imagination, Lego Technic, Lego Kingdom, Land of Adventure, and Lego City. My favorite is Miniland, where you can see Lego miniatures of famous landmarks and cities from around the world, including Kuala Lumpur with its almost 10-meter tall Twin Towers, the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat, and Indonesia’s very own Tanah Lot Temple from Bali!
As an adrenaline junkie, I enjoy extreme rides. My favorites include The Dragon roller coaster, Dino Island’s 12-meter waterfall plunge, and Project X, a roller coaster that twists through 15 turns at 18 meters high. Don’t worry, the roller coasters aren’t made of Lego plastic! For a more relaxed experience, you can take a ride on the Observation Tower at 41 meters high and watch a 4D movie. This month, a new 4D film and cluster in Miniland, titled “Legends of Chima,” was launched. Don’t forget to catch the parade and take photos with Lego characters like Emmet and Wyldstyle. It’s a blast!

Opened in October 2013, Legoland Water Park is the largest in the world. It features 20 water slides, a lazy river, wave pools, and of course, Lego-themed attractions. If you’re into thrilling slides, head to the back for the Red Rush, Twin Chaser, Brick Blaster, Wave Rider, Tidal Tube, and Slide Racers. Johor’s hot weather combined with my love for swimming made this park an absolute favorite! And… the lifeguards are quite handsome! I can’t help but melt when I see a guy who’s great at swimming. Hehe!
So, let’s plan your next fun-filled vacation to a place like this!
How to Get There
Air Asia offers direct flights with Airbus 320 from Jakarta (CGK) to Johor Bahru (JHB) four times a week, from Bandung (BDO) to Johor Bahru (JHB) four times a week, and from Surabaya (SUB) to Johor Bahru (JHB) daily. You can also fly to Singapore and take a bus to Johor Bahru in about 1.5 hours.
Tips
- Since Legoland Theme Park is still new, there aren’t many trees, so it can get quite hot. Remember to use sunscreen or bring a hat.
- For the Legoland Water Park slides, make sure to wear proper swimwear as regular clothes (shorts/tank tops) are not allowed.
- All food provided at Legoland Malaysia is halal, so there’s no alcohol sold there.
What to Do
Besides Legoland, there are other attractions nearby, such as Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park, which includes Sanrio Hello Kitty Town (yes, that cute cat icon), The Little Big Club (featuring Thomas & Friends, Barney, Bob the Builder, Angelina Ballerina, and Pingu), and LAT’s Place (an animated-themed restaurant featuring characters by the legendary Malaysian cartoonist, Lat). In the evenings, you can hang out at cafes and bars at the Waterfront. For shopping, I highly recommend Johor Premium Outlets (JPO), an outlet mall from the US with over 130 brands offering discounts of 25% to 65% daily. I’m thrilled to find my favorite brands like Gap, Adidas, Nike, Columbia, and Swatch!
