Nyang Nyang Beach is a hidden gem in Bali, located in a rather secluded spot!
Yes, in Bali, there’s a beach with a unique name that you should definitely visit when you’re on vacation there.
This is the first beach that made me think, “Wow, there’s a beach that can make me as exhausted as when I hiked Mount Batur in Kintamani.”
One of the reasons is the difficult access to the beach.
Despite that, I was intrigued by this beach because, being in South Bali, it doesn’t attract many tourists.
You could say this is one of Bali’s hidden beaches. There aren’t many like it left nowadays.
Most beaches in Bali are crowded with visitors.
So, Nyang Nyang Beach is indeed one of Bali’s hidden treasures.
A vacation in Bali without visiting here would be a missed opportunity! I first learned about this beach thanks to some colleagues who invited me.
I thought it would be just like Kuta Beach or others with easy access.
But it turns out there are countless steps you have to take to reach the hidden shore.
Slight exaggeration, but you get the idea.

Nyang Nyang Beach, Easier Access in 2024
Located at the southern tip of Bali, just before Uluwatu Temple.
The beach borders the Indian Ocean, which is known for its big waves.
So it’s no wonder that Nyang Nyang Beach is popular among professional surfers.
This is confirmed by the only sign at the entrance, which reads, “Nyang-nyang Surfing Beach.”
At first glance, it’s challenging to find this hidden beach in Bali, as there’s only one small sign along the Uluwatu-Pecatu main road.
You can spot this sign a few kilometers before reaching Uluwatu Temple.
Just as I expected, before reaching the steps leading to the beach, I encountered a rocky path typical of South Bali’s landscape.
Don’t be discouraged by the rough road.
This is the only way to reach Nyang Nyang Beach.
At the end of the rocky path, you’ll find a hill with the hidden beach far below.
How do you get to the beach? By taking the stairs! Or do you want to roll down the hill? Not me.

Descending the Hill to Reach the Beach
Finding the stairs down to the beach is quite easy. They’re next to a villa and in front of a small shop.
I was initially hesitant, seeing the beach far below. The issue wasn’t going down but climbing back up later.
Especially after playing at the beach, you’re bound to be tired, right?
But Nyang Nyang Beach, which looks stunning from atop the hill, seemed to call out,
“Come on, it’s okay, the beach is awesome, and you’ll get some exercise too.” Alright, I’m going down.
After descending the stairs, passing through many trees that resemble a mini forest, I finally reached the end.

A Vast Field and a Beautiful Rocky Beach
The end of the stairs doesn’t lead directly to sandy shores but to a grassy plain, more like a football field.
It’s a great spot to play football if you happen to bring a ball.
Right at the edge of this plain, Nyang Nyang Beach stretches out wide.
It’s almost as vast as Kuta Beach, but the sand here is slightly coarser, and there are many rocks.
And, of course, it’s a thousand times quieter than Kuta Beach.
That’s why I consider this South Bali beach one of the hidden gems of Bali.
It’s also on the must-visit list for sunset views when traveling to Bali.

Further out, you can see waves perfect for surfing, but they break before reaching the shore.
There’s a natural barrier that breaks the waves before they touch the white sandy shore with rocky edges.
So, besides surfing, this beach is also great for just playing in the sea. However, it’s not the best for swimming.
Although the natural barrier breaks the waves, the water depth might not be ideal for swimming.
What I love most is the slightly coarse texture of the sand.
It doesn’t take away from the comfort of walking along Nyang Nyang Beach.
In fact, the coarse sand feels like a natural foot therapy.
The long shoreline makes this beach a joy to walk along, and the peaceful atmosphere and fresh sea breeze are sure to make anyone want to stay and relax for hours.
As I started enjoying my time at the beach, I remembered that I had to climb those many steps again later.
I estimate there are over a hundred steps down to the beach.
Far more than the path to Green Bowl Beach.
No way I’m coming back here unless they install a lift!
For those planning to visit, the best time to enjoy Nyang Nyang Beach is in the afternoon, when it’s not too hot, and the evening breeze is refreshing.
Tips for Visiting Nyang Nyang Beach, a Hidden Gem in South Bali
To make your trip more enjoyable, here are a few tips:
- Prepare yourself physically because you’ll need to descend hundreds of steps to reach the beach. Going down is easy, but climbing back up will be exhausting.
- If you can’t swim, it’s not safe to swim at Nyang Nyang Beach. Most visitors here are professional surfers. If you can’t swim, consider other activities like picnicking on the shore, sunbathing, or playing in the sand.
- Pay attention to the tides. If the tide is high, it’s best to avoid visiting the beach.
- The best time to visit Nyang Nyang Beach is from May to October during the dry season. During the rainy season, the path to the beach can become slippery and dangerous. Alternatively, you can use the new route to the beach by motorbike, which allows you to get closer to the shore.
- Bring enough drinking water and snacks, as there are no food vendors on the beach.
- Don’t forget to bring sunscreen to protect your skin from Bali’s intense sun.
- You can also try paragliding from the hill above Nyang Nyang Beach. It’s a thrilling experience!
