Brief History of the Singapore Flyer
The Singapore Flyer is an observation wheel located in the Downtown Core district of Singapore. Officially opened on April 15, 2008, it features 28 air-conditioned capsules, each capable of holding 28 passengers. The Singapore Flyer often appears in media and popular culture that showcase Singapore. Reaching a height of 165 meters, it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world until 2014, when it was surpassed by the High Roller at 167.6 meters.
Concept and Construction Beginnings
In the early 2000s, the concept for the Singapore Flyer was first proposed by Patrick MacMahon of Melchers Project Management, a subsidiary of the German company Melchers. Official planning began in 2002. A new company, Singapore Flyer Pte Ltd, was established as the project developer, with Melchers Project Management holding a 75% stake and the remaining shares owned by Orient & Pacific Management.
The project was officially announced and approved on June 27, 2003, by the Singapore Tourism Board through the signing of a memorandum of understanding, formalizing the agreement between the developers and the tourism board regarding the land acquisition process.
Under this agreement, the tourism board would purchase a plot of land in Marina Centre from the Singapore Land Authority and lease it to Singapore Flyer Pte Ltd for 30 years, with an option to extend the lease for another 15 years. The land would be rent-free during the construction phase of the project.
Construction
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 27, 2005, with Mah Bow Tan, then-Minister for National Development, as the guest of honor. The spindle was installed on December 13, 2006, and the outer rim was completed on April 9, 2007. Installation of the passenger capsules began on August 3, 2007, and was completed on October 2, 2007.
Opening
The Flyer opened in 2008. During the Chinese New Year, its inaugural flights took place from February 11 to 13, and tickets sold out at S$8,888, a number considered auspicious in Eastern culture. The first public flight was held on Valentine’s Day, February 14, with a soft launch on March 1, and the official opening on April 15, with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as the guest of honor.
Design
The Singapore Flyer has a building area of approximately 16,000 square meters, built on a 33,700 square meter site along Marina Promenade. Designed by Arup and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, it has a capacity of up to 7.3 million passengers per year. The wheel’s typically constant rotation takes about 32 minutes for one complete revolution. The Flyer’s 28 air-conditioned capsules are mounted on the outside of the wheel structure, providing unobstructed views. Each capsule has a floor area of 26 square meters and can accommodate 28 passengers, or up to five wheelchairs and 15 other guests if pre-booked for use by disabled visitors.
Rotation Direction Reversal
Initially, the wheel rotated clockwise when viewed from Marina Centre, but on August 4, 2008, its rotation was reversed on the advice of Feng Shui experts. The wheel is also equipped with wheelchair access and lifts, disabled-friendly toilets, and designated parking for the disabled.
Acquisition
On August 28, 2014, Straco Leisure Pte. Ltd. announced the acquisition of the Singapore Flyer following financial and embezzlement issues with its now-defunct predecessor, Great Wheel Corporation. Straco Leisure Pte. Ltd. is 90% owned by Straco Corporation Limited, a Singapore-listed company that operates attractions in China such as the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium and Underwater World Xiamen. The remaining 10% is owned by WTS Leisure Pte. Ltd., one of Singapore’s largest private tour bus operators.

Prednisone And Other Corticosteroids: Balance The Risks And Benefits
Research
Corticosteroids like prednisone have revolutionized the treatment
of various inflammatory conditions, offering significant benefits in controlling symptoms and improving quality of life
for millions of patients worldwide. Ongoing research continues to explore their efficacy,
safety, and optimal usage strategies.
Education
Understanding the role of corticosteroids is essential for both healthcare providers and patients.
These medications work by suppressing the immune system’s inflammatory response, making them particularly effective in conditions like autoimmune diseases,
allergies, and chronic respiratory disorders.
Appointments at Mayo Clinic
Mayo Clinic offers comprehensive care for individuals
requiring corticosteroid therapy. Patients can schedule appointments with specialists
to receive personalized treatment plans and guidance on managing side effects.
Prednisone and other corticosteroids
Prednisone, a synthetic corticosteroid, is among the most
prescribed medications globally. While it provides potent
anti-inflammatory effects, its use must be balanced
against potential side effects and risks.
How do corticosteroids work?
Corticosteroids function by inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory molecules, thereby reducing inflammation and irritation in affected tissues and organs.
How are corticosteroids used?
These medications can be administered orally, via inhalation,
topically, or by injection, depending on the condition being treated and the patient’s specific needs.
What side effects can corticosteroids cause?
Long-term use of corticosteroids can lead to adverse
effects such as bone density loss, cardiovascular issues, and an increased risk of
infections. Monitoring is crucial to mitigate these risks.
Side effects of corticosteroids taken by mouth
Oral corticosteroids may cause gastrointestinal issues, mood
swings, and hyperglycemia, among other side effects, necessitating regular medical check-ups.
Side effects of inhaled corticosteroids
Inhalation reduces systemic absorption, minimizing side effects
like those seen with oral use. However, long-term use should still be closely monitored.
Side effects of topical corticosteroids
Topical application leads to localized effects, reducing the risk of systemic side effects compared to other forms of administration.
Side effects of injected corticosteroids
Injectable corticosteroids provide targeted relief but require careful injection technique
to avoid complications like tissue damage or infections.
Reduce your risk of corticosteroid side effects
Adhering to prescribed dosages, using the shortest duration necessary, and incorporating preventive measures can help mitigate
side effect risks.
Weigh the risks and benefits of corticosteroids
The decision to use corticosteroids should always consider individual health profiles and weigh potential
benefits against possible adverse effects.
